We play regular ladder tournament matches during club meetings throughout the year. These are fun, lightly competitive matches where players face off against their fellow chess club members to find out where they rank among their peers.
Who
All players who want to sign up.
What:
Competitive ladder matches with fellow chess club members where each player gets 25 minutes with a 5-second delay to make all of their moves. Winners move up in the rankings or "climb up the ladder," and losers move down in the rankings or "climb down the ladder." If two players draw, they keep their current ranking.
When:
Tuesdays every other practice during our regular club meetings from 4:00 to 5:00.
Where:
In Room B340
Player Expectations:
Be sure to attend practice so your opponent has someone to play
Follow the challenge rules if you want to move up the ladder faster
You must win your scheduled ladder match before you can challenge
You can only challenge a maximum of 2 spots higher than where you currently stand on the ladder
The person being challenged gets to pick the color
The game must be at least 20 minutes per side unless both players agree to an alternate time control
Challenge games must start by 4:30 unless the player being challenged agrees to a shorter time control
If you challenge and lose, you can't challenge again until you've played two more rounds of the tournament.
Have fun!
We attend all-day Saturday tournaments a few times each season. You'll compete against other students throughout the metro-East region and earn yourself a United States Chess Federation (USCF) ranking if you don't already have one! It's a fun, competitive experience that every chess player should try at least once.
